Session Description: A classroom teacher, drama specialist, and music specialist share their experiences collaborating on the creation and study of musicals as the scaffolds for curricular goals and units of study in grades 2-5. Theater is a natural vehicle for both learning and assessment through multiple intelligences: it makes spatial, linguistic, bodily-kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, and intrapersonal demands, providing opportunities for thorough assessment of learning within authentic learning experiences.
Presenter #1 Dana O’Brien, Third Grade Teacher, Baker Demonstration School.
Presenter #2 Diana Gokce, Music Specialist, Baker Demonstration School
Presenter #3 LizanneWilson, Drama Specialist, Baker Demonstration School

Hello Greek Myths Inquiry Group –
Your work is very exciting! The video you’ve produced is compelling evidence of the power of your methods, and your brain dumps provide raw material for several articles, chapters, and/or presentations.
Your presentation for PEN clearly serves as a focus for your work right now, and your work on another musical will give you still more raw data – as well as educating and entertaining a lot of very lucky students. We’re pleased that you’ve drawn on Becky Crawford’s expertise to help with the interviews.
Questions:
Would you be interested in presenting your PEN workshop again – probably with updates – at the Baker April symposium? Yes.
Could you see perhaps turning your collaborative work with the kids into an article or even a book? Yes.If so, would you welcome writing or publishing support from someone outside Baker, or would you rather do this yourselves? We would welcome outside writing/publishing support. We have already submitted an article to "Schools" Journal. Andy Kaplan expressed interest and suggested some rewriting, which we are working on. You can see it here: http://www.mediafire.com/?71kfqghcrjei4wg
Would you like more support for any other aspect of this project, whether technological, musical, dramatic, or theatrical? We would welcome any and all kinds of support, but particularly seek help documenting work on the next musical which you can read here http://www.mediafire.com/?deqax2e0tf2m9 and hear here http://www.mediafire.com/?2iogjype6m2ih Quality photography would be particularly helpful.
What you’ve accomplished already is so inspiring!

Statement summarizing focus: Engage in dialogue and hands-on experiences as a Classroom Teacher, Drama Specialist and Music Specialist examine a progressive model for improvisation, drama and music integration in the classroom curriculum in grades 2-5. Taking inspiration from children’s interests in the classroom, three teachers share their journey from idea to performance and on to assessment of an original musical play based on the Demeter and Persephone myth. What is the dividing line between process and performance? How can children’s passions influence curriculum? How does one adapt a text for a variety of learners? How do teachers build upon the work of other teachers in order to create a truly integrated experience for the child? How does all of this fit into the classroom and not exist only on the stage? Children make casting preferences, learn how to honor the other actors as individuals and see each other through multi-faceted nature of the arts. Saying yes to children’s voice and choice in the classroom can lead to exhilarating work with children and colleagues.
What we have done so far:
What we are doing next:We continue to work with the third grade to interview the children and find out what they liked and didn't like about the greek musical. These interviews are being recorded on podcasts to be posted as soon as technology will allow. Next we are looking at the musical(s) for next year and trying to decide how this one will be formatted and who will be included in this process (grade levels).
What we need: Time
*Plans for next year:** We continue to meet every Thursday and will work towards collaborating on another musical for a date yet to be decided.

What we are doing next: Becky is helping Dana with interviews of the children to probe deeper into how the experience deepened their learning of Greek Mythology. We are recording these with Audacity and will make them available as podcasts.

Would you like to collaborate with/get support from anyone from NLU? If so, do you have a certain person in mind? What kind of support would you like?
